The Bob Hughes Bass Trombone Competition 2022

The competition has two rounds; a preliminary round, whereby entrants must submit an MP3 audio file, and a final round which will take place at The British Trombone Festival at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, 200 Jennens Road, Birmingham, B4 7XR, 29–30 October 2022.

Three finalists will be chosen from the preliminary round to take part in the live final.

The Prize

The Bob Hughes Bass Trombone Competition Trophy (which remains with the winner for two years) and £300 plus a Mercer & Barker Mouthpiece.

Runners-up will each receive a Mercer & Barker Mouthpiece.

A recording with piano accompaniment is preferable.

  • An own choice piece.

The Total Playing Time should be 12 - 15 Minutes in duration.

General Conditions

  • Candidates must be aged 23 years or under on 29 October 2022 to be eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Candidates must submit an unedited mp3 file no later than midnight on Sunday, 31 July 2022.
  • Unedited mp3 files must be uploaded to the completed registration form.
  • In order to maintain impartiality, audio files must not include the names of the performer, accompanist, or any other identifying items.
  • Three finalists will be invited to play the same programme at the final competition, therefore candidates must be available to perform at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on Saturday, 29 October 2022 as part of the British Trombone Festival.
  • A piano accompanist with be available at the final, or you may bring your own accompanist.
  • Finalists will be notified by Wednesday, 31 August 2022.
  • Overseas candidates must make sure that the appropriate visas have been obtained before the date of the final.
  • The judges’ decision will be final and binding.
  • The mp3 files will remain the property of the BTS.
  • Travel expenses to and from The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire will not be paid.
  • Final round performances are open to the public.

The Entrance Fee for BTS Members is free and £30.00 for non-members. This includes admission to all areas of the BTS Festival. Non-members may pay via PayPal to our account "membership@britishtrombonesociety.org" or by card via the Registration Form. Including the reference BHBTC2022.
