Martin Wilson, affectionately known as Marty to his friends, passed away on Saturday, 4 January, 2025, following a short illness. Marty was appointed Principal Trombone of the Ulster Orchestra in 1989 and left an indelible mark on Northern Ireland’s musical community and beyond.
A brilliant trombonist - and a talented jazz singer - Marty’s artistry and passion inspired all who knew him. Away from music, he cherished time with his family, enjoyed playing golf, and took great pride in tending to his beloved rose garden.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Gillian, and his sons Brian and Alan.
One of Marty’s favourite pastimes was digitizing old records and videos, many of which he lovingly shared on his YouTube channel. His remarkable performances with the Whitburn Band, the London Trombone Ensemble, and his breath-taking rendition of Mahler’s Third Symphony remain a testament to his exceptional talent.
