Peter Bassano, RIP

The BTS is saddened to share news of the passing of Peter Bassano, who died suddenly on 1 February, 2025.

Peter studied voice and trombone at the Royal College of Music in the mid-1960’s, returning to the College as a trombone professor in 1978 and serving as Head of Brass from 1993 – 2004

A member of the Philharmonia Orchestra trombone section for 27 years, Peter also enjoyed a diverse freelance career, including recording and touring with Pink Floyd, the Bee Gees and the Beatles. Committed to the performance of early music on period instruments Peter was a long-time member of His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts, as well as ensembles such as the English Baroque Soloists and the Gabrieli Consort. A descendant of Venetian musicians brought to play at Henry VIII’s court, Peter researched and published extensively on the Bassano Family.

Peter was founder and Artistic Director of Equale Brass, recording seven albums of music for brass quintet, and commissioning many new works from composers such as David Bedford and John Tavener. He also championed the work of contemporary composers within the Brass Band tradition.

In addition to performing, Peter followed a successful career as a conductor. Still very active in this area, he served as Musical Director and Conductor for several orchestras and choral ensembles.

All our thoughts go out to Peter’s family and friends at this sad time.
